It's Official!

Today at 10:00 AM we signed all the papers for the Chinese government and the Guangxi Zhuong Autonomous Region that made An Lin officially a member of our family. We agreed never to abuse her or abandon her, to love her forever. We were asked what we thought about education. We replied that college was in her future! The official was mildly concerned about us as An Lin was in the middle of a meltdown during the official interview, from her evening caregiver first monopolizing her at the government office, then departing abruptly. We were also asked had she been crying all night? We showed photos of her playing and feeding Mama. The official relaxed after we responded to her question that, yes, we had experienced this kind of reaction before, with our first daughter. (Xing Xing, of course, had expressed her rejection more vigorously!!!) We were not worried..... As before I choked up thanking China for the privilege of parenting these beautiful girls. After that emotionally draining start to the day we had a relaxing morning with the girls playing in our hotel room. An Lin is incredibly curious and observes everything. I just had to show her twice how to start her sister's Barbie "computer" for her to get the hang of it. Xing Xing is being a great big sister, most of the time being exceedingly generous. An Lin was given three new dollies, very similar to ones that Xing Xing has, but, of course has decided that she prefers Sally, Xing Xing's doll from her Aunt Mary who has seen a fair amont of wear and tear! We received an incredible gift from the orphanage: An Lin's file from the beginning including the records from her participation in the Half the Sky Little Sisters Program. We were thrilled to receive this priceless information. The file contains many photos and An Lin loved looking at it, pointing to herself and saying her name. (She also loves to look at the photos on the computer, pointing to each of us and identifying us.)An in likes to imitate her sister. When the two of them were having fun in the bath, she dumped a cup of water on her own head following Xing Xing who was rinsing her hair. She is a fun-loving child! An Lin is quite content to wander around the hotel room checking things out. She is delighted with her new toys and any thing else we have given her, like her new purple hair brush. We went shopping with Yolanda our wonderful Holt guide in Walmart(!) and An Lin vigorously indicated she would like a particular pair of squeaky sandals. When those didn't come in her size she let out a large bellow that had the three adults scrambling to find a substitute. Later, when it was time to go to dinner, she quickly went to get her new shoes then chose one of her sister's jackets to wear and brought both to her mother to put on. I can see we are in for it!!!

"Four Family"

For months Xing Xing has been talking about the fact that we were a "three family" about to become a "four family" and tonight we became one!!!! We are very happy!!! Our new Xiao Xiao /An Lin is a beautiful, bright child who has strong ideas about what she wants! At the "handoff" at 4:30 An Lin gradually accepted our presence until it was time to leave the government office and she realized her caregivers were going away. She broke out into heart wrenching sobs, then quieted on the ride back to the hotel and again gradually became more comfortable. Clearly the orphanage staff had prepared her for us, using the album we sent ahead of time to identify us to her. She could point to our pictures and say Mama, Baba, JieJie. An Lin enjoys her Jie Jie (big sister) and her big sister Xing Xing also likes playing with her , although she would prefer to have all the attention. Later on that evening An Lin began to initiate games with her new Mama, laughing and playing, culminating in deciding to feed Mama a cookie, a game that Xing Xing joined in on. An Lin is a lovely child, very tiny. She is more curious and mischievous than we expected from the info we had received and is very clear about expressing her wants. At sleep time, An Lin became more distressed and once again had a melt down. All, of course, very normal, but our hearts break for her fear and pain of loss. Finally, she calmed down and fell asleep with Mama, who didn't sleep too much!!

Nanning

We sadly left our apartment in Guilin and the lovely staff that had made our stay so enjoyable at 7:00 this morning to happily get on the train to Nanning where we will meet our new daughter tomorrow. The four and a half hour journey was unexpectedly stressful and extremely uncomfortable as the train was packed to the gills with people returning to jobs and schools after being home for the spring festival (the end of Chinese New Year). Every seat and aisle and nook and cranny were crammed with people and luggage and huge bags. As always, the Chinese people were very warm and friendly to us and one young woman who spoke English went out of her way to help us navigate the train. Our Nanning guide met us with an album of wonderful very recent photos and an updated info summary on An Lin and our week's itinerary. We meet An Lin at the Civil Affairs office tomorrow at 4:30. Tomorrow she will be making the same journey from Guilin to Nanning on the same train that we did today. We are almost there! My heart is in my mouth. Today is our last day as a family of three. I look at the wonder that is my daughter Xing Xing and feel the deep love I have for her and imagine how our family dynamic is about to change. She is busy dividing the hotel room into territories-hers and An Lin's. On the one hand she makes sure that anything she has, An Lin has also. On the other, she makes clear what is NOT to be shared and which bed, drawer, etc is hers. She was thrilled when a bride and groom at the Mingyuan Hotel where we are staying gave her a candy.

Li River Cruise and Guangxi Pearls

We had a wonderfully relaxing day today enjoying the fabled Li River cruise. It was especially precious as this will probably be our last opportunity for a very long while for much rest and relaxation. Tomorrow we take the five hour train ride to Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, for An Lin's adoption and the challenges of transition to follow. The Li River, which is said to be the home of Chinese watercolor, is as beautiful as it is reputed, even with limited visibility from the mist. We completed the day by buying some beautiful Guangxi pink pearls for An Lin for when she gets older, just as we had purchased some black pearls for her sister when we brought Xing Xing home. It was a lovely day; we are sad to be leaving Guilin, but are eager to meet our daughter and know we will be back for a visit when An Lin is old enough to enjoy it.

A Special Day

Our first day was a special day of mixed blessings: some keen disappointments, gentle Guilin pleasures, memorable moments and one extraordinary gift. We had a good (short!!!) night's sleep and a relaxed breakfast at the apartment, cooked for us by the housekeeper of the complex and then headed out to the SWI with our guide. We met the manager of the children's section who showed us around the outside of the SWI complex, which houses infants, toddlers and school age children. It has a large, cheerful, pleasant courtyard of greenery with a colorful playground. We had three requests for the SWI. The manager reiterated the policy that we would not be allowed to see An Lin, so our first request was denied. That was disappointing, although we had known to expect it. We were also denied our second request to see several children whose parents-to-be in the US are awaiting travel approvals from China. That was extremely frustrating because other recent adoptive parents had been able to gain access and we ourselves were the recipients of their recent photos of An Lin. These families are members of a very supportive internet list that has been very helpful and I had wanted to return the favor by emailing them their children's current photos. Not to be....... Sorry, Sharon, Jill, Pat!!!! Our third request to meet and talk with An Lin's nanny from Half the Sky was met with confusion and it appeared that, too, was not going to happen. A group of nannies gathered around us each telling of their five or six children now adopted abroad. They were so proud of these children. Then we saw Tang Meiyin running toward us. We recognized her from her pictures. We had the most precious moments with her as she told us about An Lin and Chris videotaped her with a message to An Lin to have a good life, a memory of her life in the SWI which she can have forever. We got the most valuable info from her about An Lin's likes and dislikes, how to comfort her. We learned that our new daughter is "very bossy"! Uh oh!! That makes two bossy daughters in our house! Unfortunately, because it was very chilly and misting, few children were outside, so we didn't get to see many at all, although Xing Xing played with those that were on the swings and slides. She is counting the days until her sister joins us. I am happy we all have some time together alone so we can fully experience Xing Xing's first visit back to her native country. It is very moving to see her taking it all in and to be surrounded by her birth culture and people who look like her. She has a crush on Diana, our guide. At home she has many Chinese born children as friends, but only a few adults of Chinese descent in her life. We visited An Lin's finding spot, the plaza of Guilin's north railway station and took many pictures for her for when she more fully learns her story. It was extremely moving to be there. As per our agreement, we spent the next couple of hours buying needed supplies for the orphanage, had a yummy lunch, then rested before dinner and a fabulously theatrical show of dances of the minority groups that inhabit Guangxi Autonomous Region. A very full day!

We're Here!

We left Wednesday morning at 8:30 and 26 grueling hours later have arrived in Guilin Thursday midnight! Xing Xing was a trouper! She's always been a good traveler. Mom and Dad are bleary eyed, but grateful for a safe and relatively smooth journey--the only delays from the snow in NYC! It is exhilirating to be in China again and to feel the incredible energy. We are staying in a comfortable apartment in a new complex in Guilin. From our thirteenth floor window we have a view that is now quintessential China: construction at a feverish pace- several towering building cranes, including one a few feet away, constructing highrises, while just beyond the first is a series of small farm plots, fields, flowering trees and ancient houses with the mountains in the background. Before we left we received last minute permission to go to An Lin's SWI (orphanage) and so we will be there Friday, but were told when we arrived we will not be permitted to see her. (Soooo disappointing!!!) We hope to photograph other children for parents still waiting in the US for travel permission ( and maybe, just maybe, by accident see An Lin!!.) Xing Xing is enjoying her first hours here, although did need reassurance from Mom that it was just for a visit!!!

At Last!!!

After counting down the days, spending countless hours on documents, travel arrangements, and packing , we are at last ready to go! We are all so excited!!! Tomorrow we leave for Beijing, then Guilin arriving very late on March 8. On Friday, March 9, we will be able to visit the SWI and perhaps see our beautiful little daughter for the first time. We can hardly believe it! It will be hard to leave her-even temporarily..........On Saturday, March 10, we will take a boat trip on the beautiful and legendary Li River. Then off to Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Autonomous Region, by 5 hour train ride on Sunday. Monday is the great day, when An Lin joins our family! The adoption is finalized in China on Tuesday and then a week of bonding --and paperwork-- to obtain all the necessary papers for An lin to leave China. On Friday, March 16, we fly to Guangzhou, where we have the important appointment with the American consulate, that will provide our new daughter with the documents to enter the US. More bonding--and shopping--staying at the legendary White Swan, where almost every American family stays when they adopt in China. Thursday, March 22, we will fly to Beijing and then home.
